I have difficulty reaching various secure web sites. They give me a certificate expired error. They work on Firefox but not Safari or Chrome. They also work on newer versions of macOS (e.g. Catalina, Big Sur). This seems to be because Safari and Chrome use the OS root certificate store and Firefox uses its own, and El Capitan is not being updated.

What the script does is splits the .pem file into a number of certificates in the temporary directory concerned, then adds them as trustRoot certificates to the System key chain; they will then operate as trusted roots in addition to the certificates in the original "System Roots" keychain. In case you were wondering, you cannot add them to the System Roots keychain as that can only be updated by the operating system.
Thanks for reaching out! On March 15, Google released Chrome 99, which contained a new code signing certificate. Because of this change, 1Password 6 for Mac no longer works in Chrome 99 or later. The last major update to 1Password 6 for Mac was almost 4 years ago, and as 1Password is a security product, we strongly recommend keeping it up to date.
I am having the same issue as the above user. I am currently running 1Password 6.8.9, and don't appear to be able to update to a newer version. I am on a fairly old computer, iMac Mid 2010, running OS 10.11.6 El Capitan (which cannot be updated to a newer OS according to Apple). I am a little frustrated that the 1Password Chrome extension is no longer working, as I use it frequently. Is there any solution that does not involve updating to 1Password 7? Or can I update to 1Password 7 without signing up for a subscription? I have been using this application for many years, I originally bought it in 2014. It has worked well for me, but I am not interested in signing up for a subscription service for an application that I already paid for.
As browsers and operating systems evolve and update, it's necessary for software that integrates with them to continue to stay up to date with the changes to the ecosystem. While I can understand your frustration, 1Password 6 was a great app and had its time in the sun. We moved onto 1Password 7 four years ago, and we'd be happy to help you make the jump. If you'd rather stay on 1Password 6, you can copy and paste your passwords into Chrome.
Additionally, it's my understanding that all the 2010 iMac releases (21.5 inch and 27 inch) should be able to update to macOS 10.13. This would allow you to use 1Password 7, as High Sierra is the earliest supported version of macOS by 1Password 7.
since updating to 10.11.6 on a iMac (27-inch, Mid 2011) my computer now struggles with displays and apps, it is sluggish and displays are very jittery. watching videos is impossible on full screen, what to do????
Yes. Seeing about 10% of the performance. Seeing the samba shares falling off on simple aja test. Same workspace can be mounted on the updated clients with AFP and performance is normal. Same Workspaces can be mounted on older OS clients and performance is normal. This simply seems to be samba-only as no other hardware/software configuration changes have ocured. Updated TB/Ethernet bridge firmware which did not solve issue(ATTO NT12). Anyone know where to find release notes? Anyone find a solution? nsmb.conf? sys.conf?

I have had trouble previously installing the update to 10.11.5 on my iMac in the form of an unresponsive blank screen after rebooting. I had the same problem for this upgrade, but this time I had found a solution.
I have experienced the freezing issue (post 10.11.4 update, continuing) with Safari, Chrome, and Civilization and yes it happens most often with YouTube but also other video embedded services. I would have downgraded to 10.11.3 to fix it but I have password protected notes now which would be unusable. If I had known the freezing would be a problem I would have avoided the update to begin with of course.
The same freeze and reboot with my Early 2011 MacBook Pro. It clearly says GPU issue, but APC refuses to own up to the problem. I just upgraded to 10.11.6 and it still freezes or reboots, especially when I enter email address in Google Chrome Gmail.
I had to punt the upgrade as it was clearly hung up. I tried two other times too with the same outcome. I plan to try the combo update this weekend. Fingers crossed. Hate to say it but Apple slipping on the buggy software banana peel the last few years.
Firefox version 78 was the last supported Firefox version for Mac users of OS X 10.9 Mavericks, OS X 10.10 Yosemite and OS X 10.11 El Capitan. These users were moved to the Firefox Extended Support Release (ESR) channel by an application update. This was done to provide security updates until the final Firefox 78 ESR update (version 78.15.0esr) was released on October 5, 2021. Affected users will not receive any further security updates.
Although Apple does not have a public policy governing security updates for older OS X releases, its practice is to support the most recent three releases. Apple made the last security update applicable to OS X 10.11 available in July 2018. Unsupported operating systems do not receive security updates, have known exploits and can be dangerous to use, which makes it difficult to maintain Firefox on those versions.
Up until October 2021, we were updating affected users with critical security updates through the Firefox ESR channel, to help retain the best possible security. After this, no security updates will be provided.
This really is devastating. I can resolve the problem for myself simply by using Firefox. But what of the many friends and customers who use Chrome on MACs they purchased 5 years ago? Yosemite won't update. Chrome won't update. It should not be necessary for everyone to purchase new computers just to visit the websites they like to frequent. Do you think anyone will develop a simple patch I can add to make my websites accessible?
Unfortunately, this is the way web based encryption was designed. It's ultimately about trust. Old computers and devices that are no longer being updated by their manufacturer don't know how to trust new Certificate Authorities or changes to existing Certificate Authorities. So they require some form of manual intervention in order to update that trust.
I understand your frustration. But as you can personally attest, they don't. They need to be willing to use different software like Firefox. It may also be possible to manually update the trust configuration on these old devices so they can continue using Chrome. I'm not familiar enough with the platform to say for sure. But it would require each user to make the change themselves (or a tech-savvy friend/relative) once the instructions are known.
I'm not sure why your friends and customers aren't able to update Yosemite or Chrome, but it would be good to contact Apple support about the problem. In particular, people who aren't receiving updates to their browser are at risk for malware, since each new browser release usually fixes some serious security bugs.
Thank you, everyone, for your feedback! Chrome (version 87) won't update because it says the Yosemite version (10.10.5) is too old. Yosemite won't update because the 2013 MAC is too old. I'll try Apple Support. Meanwhile, I'll scout around to see if I can find a third party SSL certificate that will buy me a couple more years.
I can Confirm a fix that worked on both a 10.9.5 & 10.11.6 Mac OS. Simply set the DST Root CA X3 to "Always Trust" on several Mac's I manage in an office and home's this fix work for 4 websites that previously had issues with this CERT ERR.
In keeping with Apple's release cycle, macOS 10.11 El Capitan is no longer receiving security updates as of August 2018. El Capitan was replaced by Sierra 10.12, High Sierra 10.13 and the current release, macOS 10.14 Mojave. Safari in El Capitan lets users pin tabs for frequently accessed websites to the tab bar, similar to Firefox and Google Chrome. I'm getting this same issue only after updating to 1.17.0. It was working fine before on 1.16.0. I'm on a Mac running OS X 10.11.6 and Chrome browser Version 56.0.2924.87 (64-bit). The error I get is "Unhandled Exception (1)" in a popup window and then forced to re-login. This happens any time I try to go any lower than just the top pages for navigation including edit settings, etc. 2ff7e9595c
